NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON
INTERSECTIONS OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND
PRECARIOUS IMMIGRATION STATUS

June 5, 2014
University of Toronto, St. George Campus

What?

The Migrant Mothers Project at Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work in partnership with the Woman Abuse Council of Toronto (WomanACT) hosted over 120 people to take part in a day long event titled, "Intersections of Violence Against Women and Precarious Immigration Status—A National Symposium for Advocacy and Community Mobilization".

This Symposium was a full-day event held at the University of Toronto to engage with an active network of service providers, activists, policy analysts, researchers and immigrant women in Canada.

Panels and workshops focused on advocacy and community engagement strategies for/with immigrant women with precarious status on a range of cross-cutting issues. Please click on the links above to watch videos of our panel presenters, policy briefs, and information about our workshop and panel speakers. Topics addressed at the symposium included the following:
  • Access to Education
  • Access to Health Care
  • Access to Social Assistance
  • Workers’ Rights
  • Pathways to Permanent Residence
  • Detention & Deportation

Who?

The symposium was open to service providers, government employees, activists, academics and community members with shared areas of interest in immigrant rights, immigration settlement and/or the violence against women sector.

Speakers from Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and Vancouver presented in the morning panels. Local grassroots groups and community organizations led workshops in the afternoon.

Our goal:

Through this symposium, we aimed to bring together a representation of people across Canada and Ontario who were involved in policy advocacy and community mobilization in response to changes in immigration policy, the production of “illegality” and impacts on violence against women.
